Walt Disney World

Planning a Walt Disney World vacation

Walt Disney World is easiest to plan when you decide things in the right order. Here is the order we use.

When should I start planning a Walt Disney World trip?

Six to twelve months ahead gives you the widest choice of resorts and dates. Dining reservations open on a fixed window set by Disney, so decide your dates and resort first, then reservations.

The order that works

  1. Dates and budget. Everything else depends on them.
  2. Where to stay. Resort type and location change both price and how your days feel.
  3. Tickets. The number of days and the park options you want.
  4. Dining reservations. Disney opens these up to 60 days before arrival, with extra days for longer stays. Check Disney's page for the current rule.
  5. Attraction access. Disney sells skip-the-line options separately and changes them often. Check Disney's current rules before you buy.

Things worth asking before you book

  • How much walking can everyone in the group do in a day?
  • Does anyone need a midday break, and can you get back to the room easily?
  • Which meals matter enough to plan around?
