Animal Kingdom Guide: Pandora, the Safari, and Why It's More Than Just a Zoo

Disney Animal Kingdom Pandora Avatar

Animal Kingdom is the most underappreciated park at Walt Disney World. Families often treat it as a half-day park or skip it entirely, assuming it's "just a zoo." This is a mistake. Animal Kingdom is the largest Disney theme park in the world (580 acres), home to the most extraordinary new land in Disney history (Pandora, The World of Avatar), and offers experiences that are genuinely unlike anything else at Disney World. Plan a full day. Here's how.

Pandora: The World of Avatar

When Pandora opened in 2017, it set a new standard for theme park immersive land design. The bioluminescent floating mountains, the alien plant life, the atmospheric design, it's breathtaking at any time of day, but especially at dusk when the bioluminescent glow activates throughout the land. Make time to simply walk through Pandora and take it in, not just rush to the rides.

Avatar Flight of Passage ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

The best ride at Walt Disney World. Possibly the best theme park attraction in the world. You're straddled on a banshee (a flying creature from the film) and launched into the skies and oceans of Pandora in a 4D experience with wind, water mist, and a wraparound screen that makes your body genuinely believe it's flying. The sensation is extraordinary. Book Lightning Lane Multi Pass for Flight of Passage at exactly 7 AM, this is your top priority for the entire park. It will be gone by 7:15 AM on busy days.

Na'vi River Journey ⭐⭐⭐

A gentle boat ride through a bioluminescent forest with an animatronic Shaman of Songs that is the most detailed and lifelike Disney has ever created. Completely different experience from Flight of Passage, much more suitable for young children. Also on LLMP. Book it as a second priority.

Kilimanjaro Safaris

This is a real safari on a real African savanna ecosystem in the middle of Florida, with actual free-ranging African animals, lions, elephants, giraffes, zebras, hippos, crocodiles, and dozens of other species. The safari vehicles drive through a 110-acre ecosystem that is genuinely wild. Go in the first hour after park opening. Animals are most active in the morning; by midday they've often retreated to shade and you'll see far fewer. This is consistently one of the top-rated experiences at all of Walt Disney World despite having no special effects or technology.

Festival of the Lion King

A live stage show in a 1,500-seat theater with acrobats, dancers, singers, and performers in elaborate costumes bringing The Lion King to life. It runs multiple times daily and is one of the best live shows at any Disney park. Get there 20 minutes early. Young kids lose their minds for it.

Expedition Everest ⭐⭐⭐⭐

A roller coaster through the Himalayas, into the lair of the Yeti, and backwards through the dark. One of the best coasters at Disney World. Worth grabbing on LLMP or riding at rope drop before Flight of Passage wait times build up.

Dining at Animal Kingdom

Satu'li Canteen in Pandora is the best counter-service restaurant at all of Walt Disney World. The Pandora-themed bowls with various protein options and the chili garlic plant-based tofu are genuinely excellent. Yak & Yeti table-service restaurant in the Asia section serves solid pan-Asian cuisine in a gorgeous setting.
