Disney Cruise Packing List: What to Bring and What to Leave at Home

Packing for a Disney cruise is different from packing for a theme park trip. You're living on a ship, dressing for multiple different occasions, and visiting ports where what you bring off the ship matters as much as what you have on it. Here's my full list.

Clothing, What to Pack

Daytime casual

• Swimsuits (pack 2 per person minimum, you'll use them more than you think)
• Swim cover-ups or board shorts for walking around the ship
• Comfortable walking shoes for port days
• Sandals or flip-flops for pool decks and Castaway Cay
• Lightweight shorts, t-shirts, and casual tops

Evenings in the dining room

Disney Cruise Line has a "Smart Casual" dress code for most dinners and a Formal or Semi-Formal night on most itineraries (one night for 3–4 night cruises, two nights for 7-night cruises). What this means in practice:

• Smart casual nights: khakis and a polo, sundresses, casual slacks, no shorts or t-shirts in the dining room
• Formal/Semi-formal night: cocktail dresses, suits, nice separates. Disney does not require tuxedos but you'll see them. Kids in their finest is adorable.

Disney Cruise-specific gear

• Mickey ears or Disney-themed accessories: Optional but fun, especially for deck parties and formal nights. Many families wear matching Disney outfits for the Sail Away Party.
• Lanyards and ID holders: Your Key to the World card is your room key, payment method, and port check-in ID. A lanyard keeps it accessible.

Practical Essentials

• Sunscreen: Critical for Castaway Cay and any outdoor port day. Reef-safe sunscreen is required at Castaway Cay. Buy it before you cruise, ship prices are high.
• Motion sickness remedies: Sea Bands (acupressure wristbands), Dramamine, or Bonine. Even people who don't typically get seasick can feel rough on certain crossings. The ship's medical center sells remedies but at significant markups.
• Portable power strip (non-surge protected): Disney ship cabins have limited outlets. A power strip (specifically non-surge-protected, surge protectors are prohibited) is essential for charging multiple devices. A multi-port USB charger is a good addition.
• Refillable water bottle: Water, lemonade, and iced tea are available at self-serve stations around the pool deck at no charge. A refillable bottle saves constant trips.
• Small waterproof bag: For snorkeling gear, phones, and valuables at Castaway Cay's beach.
• Snorkel gear: Rentals are available at Castaway Cay but bring your own if you prefer a good fit, especially for kids.

What Disney Provides

You don't need to pack these, they're provided in your stateroom:

• Shampoo, conditioner, and bath gel (Disney's H2O+ products)
• Hair dryer
• Towels and pool towels (available on decks)
• Life jackets for the muster drill (stored in your cabin)
• Daily Navigator (activity schedule delivered to your room each evening)

What to Leave at Home

• Surge protectors: Prohibited on Disney ships. Bring a plain power strip instead.
• Irons: Prohibited. The ship has a self-service laundry with an iron, or use the ship's pressing service.
• Too much luggage: Ship cabins are compact and cleverly designed, but overpacking creates real storage challenges. Be ruthless about what you actually need for the length of your cruise.
