Castaway Cay is Disney's private island in the Bahamas, and it's one of the absolute highlights of any Disney Cruise Line itinerary that visits it. For many families, the Castaway Cay day is the favorite part of the entire cruise. Here's how to spend a perfect day there.
The Basics
Castaway Cay is a small Bahamian island, about 1,000 acres total, that Disney has developed into a self-contained vacation experience. The ship docks directly at a pier on the island (no tender boats needed), making access easier than at many private cruise ports. Castaway Cay typically appears on Bahamas and Caribbean itineraries.
Castaway Cay Beach Options
Family Beach (closest to ship)
The main beach area accessible directly from the ship. Has the most amenities, the most kids' activities, and the most shade. Generally the most crowded but also has the most going on.
Pelican Plunge
An offshore platform with waterslides accessible by swimming or kayak. Kids absolutely love this. Fun for adults too. Located within the family beach area.
Castaway Family Pool / Spring-A-Leak
A water play area with shallow pools, slides, and water effects. Perfect for toddlers and younger kids who aren't quite ready for ocean swimming.
Serenity Bay (Adult-Only Beach)
A separate beach area for adults 18+. Takes a tram to get there. Much less crowded, quieter, has its own bar, and is the ideal escape for adults wanting time away from the family activity.
The Best Activities to Book
Snorkeling Lagoon
A protected lagoon with marked snorkel trails. Includes "treasure" Disney has placed underwater (statues, ship anchors, even a submarine prop). Equipment rental available at the snorkel hut. One of the most beloved Castaway Cay experiences.
Beach Bike Rental
Rent bikes ($10 to $15) to explore the island. There's a paved path that runs across the island and shows you views you can't get from the beach.
5K Run / Walk
Disney offers a free official 5K run on Castaway Cay mornings. Sign up at the cruise activities desk. Costs nothing, gets you a free Disney 5K medal, and you'll see parts of the island other guests don't.
Castaway Air
A 50-foot inflatable water trampoline / climber positioned in the ocean. Great for older kids and adults.
The Best Food
Lunch on Castaway Cay is included in your cruise fare. Two main options:
- Cookie's BBQ: The largest buffet, closest to the family beach. BBQ ribs, chicken, burgers, hot dogs, fruit, sides. Great for families.
- Serenity Bay BBQ: Adult-only beach version. Slightly more refined buffet with the same general American BBQ theme but in a quieter setting.
Both have full bars (drinks are extra). The Castaway Cay signature cocktail, Konk Cooler, is a tropical drink everyone gets at least once.
The Perfect Castaway Cay Day Schedule
- 7:30 AM: Wake up, breakfast on the ship
- 8:30 AM: First off the ship. Get a beach chair in your preferred spot before crowds arrive.
- 9:00 AM: Snorkeling if it's a priority. The water is calmest in the morning.
- 10:30 AM: Pelican Plunge water slides with the kids. Or bike rental for adults.
- 12:00 PM: Lunch at Cookie's BBQ. Beach chair break afterward.
- 2:00 PM: Beach time. Build sand castles, read in the sun, swim.
- 3:30 PM: Ice cream at the snack stand. Kids' activities at the family beach.
- 4:30 PM: Back to the ship to rest before dinner.
What to Bring vs Leave Behind
Bring:
- Swimsuits (already on, ready to go)
- Beach cover-ups
- Sunscreen (reef-safe required, applied generously before leaving the ship)
- Hat and sunglasses
- Phone in waterproof case
- Water bottle (Disney provides water stations on the island)
- Cash for tips at the bars
Leave on the ship:
- Beach towels (Disney provides them)
- Snorkel gear (available to rent, but bring your own for fit if preferred)
- Lunch (it's included on the island)
- Most valuables (Castaway Cay is safe but no need to bring jewelry)
The Castaway Cay Day Is What Sells Disney Cruises
Talk to families who have done a Disney cruise and ask what their favorite day was. Half will say the Castaway Cay day. It's a private Bahamian island with Disney attention to detail, included meals, character meet-and-greets on the beach, and all the relaxation you came on a cruise for. If you have an itinerary that includes Castaway Cay, you're getting one of the best cruise days available anywhere in the industry.
